Pelvic Health Physiotherapy in Ontario: Here’s What to Know Before You Book

Let’s clear something up right away because we get this question a lot:“Do I need a referral to see a pelvic health physiotherapist?”

Short answer: Nope.

In Ontario, you don’t need a referral to book an appointment with a pelvic health physio—or for any of our other services like chiropractic care, physiotherapy, or psychotherapy.

The only time you might need a referral? If your insurance provider asks for one in order to reimburse you. So before you book, just give them a quick call to double check. As for us at Diamond Physiotherapy—you’re good to go. No doctor’s note required.

So... What Actually Happens at a Pelvic Health Appointment?

We get it—talking pelvic floors isn’t exactly dinner party conversation. It can feel awkward or vulnerable. That’s why we want you to know exactly what to expect, right from the start.

🗣️ Step 1: We Chat

Your first visit always starts with a conversation. We’ll talk about what’s been going on, what symptoms you’ve been experiencing, how long it’s been an issue, and what your goals are. Nothing is too small or too “weird” to bring up—we’ve heard it all.

We’ll also review your intake form and medical history so we’re not missing anything important or repeating things you’ve already tried.

🧠 Step 2: Understanding You

Every body is different. Every experience is different. And you are the expert on yours. We’ll ask questions, listen to your story, and work together to make sure we understand the full picture before moving forward.

🧤 Step 3: The Physical Assessment

Here’s the deal: this part is always your choice.

Some assessments can be done externally, fully clothed. Others may involve an internal exam—but that only happens if you understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and you give your full consent. We’ll explain everything clearly and pause anytime you need.

You’re in control every step of the way.

What Happens After?

Your first appointment is usually about an hour long. That gives us time to assess, chat, answer questions, and start building a plan together. Follow-up sessions are typically 30–45 minutes—enough time to check in, make adjustments, and keep making progress.

And if you’d like us to share a summary with your primary care provider, we’re happy to do that too (with your permission, of course).

Bottom Line?

Pelvic health doesn’t have to be mysterious or intimidating.

At Diamond Physiotherapy, we believe in open conversations, personalized care, and helping you feel comfortable and confident in your body—no matter what stage of life you’re in.

Have questions? Reach out anytime. We’re always here to help you take that first step (or wobble, or squat, or stretch 😉).
